New Boutique Cigar: Big Sky Cigar Co. “The Yellowstone”

The Big Sky Tobacco cigar factory is located in Billings, Montana. Prior to World War I, a little-known fact is Montana was part of the “golden age” of cigars with well over 110 factories.  In those days, cigars were found in every store you could think of, including saloons, train stations, depots, hotels, drug stores, beauty parlors, doctor’s offices, and even churches.

Now they stand as one of only two factories producing cigars in Montana. Founder Jess Coleman wanted to bring back the tradition that was the Montana cigar.  The idea came to fruition last summer while Jess smoking a cigar with his buddy at a lake near Red Lodge, MT. wondering why cigar production in Montana had disappeared.  He then partnered with Brandon Marsh and set sail to form alliances and seek out premium tobacco leaf in Estelí, Nicaragua for the project.  Thus, a dream became reality, launched in 2019 this fledgling brand is bringing the Montana cigar heritage back to life.

Giving back to the state in which they grew up is paramount, by creating jobs with factory operations and donating a portion of sales from every box to the Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation, a Montana based therapeutic fly-fishing program for post 9/11 combat veterans and their families.  As you may have guessed they are very passionate about fly fishing.  The “Yellowstone” is the first cigar launched of a series of 5 all named after prolific fisheries, mainly rivers in the state.

Big Sky Yellowstone Rothschild is a 5 X 50 cigar with an Ecuadorian sun-grown Connecticut seed wrapper with Nicaraguan Estelí long filler and binder. With this light brown wrapper and slightly oily sheen this is a beautiful cigar that has been flawlessly constructed.  Modern white band of minimalist design featuring a secondary band around the foot reading “Yellowstone hand rolled” hand rolled in Estelí.

The Cigar smells of sweet hay and vanilla off the foot and the same sweet notes come from the cold draw.  This mild smoke starts off with a distinct herbal note, earth, oak, a faint white pepper, and leather that gives a pleasurable lingering taste on the back of the palate.  The cigar morphs into medium body in the second third and all of the flavors start to ramp up with hints of oregano now arriving. Great draw and perfect burn with a tight light grey ash that held on until the half way point.

This is a very elegant looking cigar but designed with the idea of an accompaniment to the great outdoors and to be enjoyed while fly fishing on the river, or out riding horseback through the lush landscape. Perfect morning smoke with your morning cup of coffee or midafternoon smoke paired with a Hefeweizen or really anytime a mild to medium smoke is desired.  If this is falls into your flavor profile then Big Sky is definitely worth checking out.

Looking forward to the coming offerings from Big Sky Cigar Co.!
